Busy hands

While I have not been blogging, I certainly have not been idle. I ended up taking Bry out of school last year and homeschooling through the public schools extension program. It was necessary for him to be removed from the middle school environment before he was eaten alive! The public / home school extension has teachers on staff who teach classes, you can put your child in the classes part time, or full time. I chose part time. I had him in his math, science, and reading classes. Parents are required to be on campus during class hours, so I had to cut my hours at work. I don't sit still very well, so I found a way to occupy myself.

As I worked, I found that I really enjoy making bags that are not like any other you see on the internet. If you google Plarn or plastic crochet, you get Plain Jane plastic tote bags that are made without much thought to design or colors. I put out the word that I needed peoples plastic bags, and they came to me by the hundreds.

Most of my bags sold as soon as they were completed. I even took in several special orders. This kept me busy, and made up a bit of the lost income (just a tiny bit). But most importantly, it was a portable expression of my "artistic side". I barely made it out to the gardens this year, so My weeds grew like a garden! I did manage to completely rework the front yard and side beds before winter though.

Yes, I actually moved all the plants that had been growing for several years, and totally rearranged the front yard. My idea was to close in the front from the sidewalk and afford a bit more privacy. I actually did it because I cannot stand the HOA president here, and maybe, just a little bit of me wanted to see if they would write me up... (They had written me up because my gardens needed to be weeded)...

Well, they had a special meeting because my husband had removed a tree that was dropping nasty sap all over our cars, but had not replaced it yet. I received a call from a friend on the board who said the HOA president was actually filing a complaint with the city over it. Well... The city told my husband that there were no rules about there HAVING to be a tree there. BUT if he planted one, he had to use the root barrier system to keep the roots from buckling the sidewalk. Of course there were none there to begin with with the original tree. I did get a beautiful little dogwood out of the deal. My husband said he could deal with trees that drop flowers much better than those that drop sap.

Of course it will take a long time to reach the size of the original tree. I had been nurturing it for the last 11 years since buying the house. Mine were the tallest, fullest and prettiest on the street (IMHO).

I saved the best for last.

I QUIT SMOKING!!!!!

my last cigarette was Sunday, August 7, 2011.

I have had to learn how to "DEAL" with life all over again.

I have been medicating myself with nicotine for 26 years.

This is the hardest thing I have EVER done.

EVER

Seriously!!!

I thought I would kill someone.

Or die trying.

BUT

We survived the hardest part.

Every day I make the decision not to smoke

several times a day.

I hope it gets easier.

Oh, My sister is on her 17th round of Chemo this time. We don't know how many more.

She did radiation first, and they did a surgery between, and it almost killed her.

But she is amazing. She keeps fighting.

Here she is "modeling" a hat and scarf I made her.

What Happened?

All that time, energy, and devotion just disappeared. I don't know why! So much has happened over the last 1+ year, and I don't even remember half of it! Those of you who follow my mom at http://yestheyareallmine-mom.blogspot.com/ know our family has been thrown around a bit this last 7 months. We are strong, we are being taught by the smartest woman I have ever met as to how to deal with this terrible beast. Kris, my sister is sick again, this time, cancer is all over her body, and yet she is dealing with it so much better than those of us who are well.
Darian went away to college, did extremely well, came home for summer, went back for fall, but our finances will not allow him to go back for winter, so he will be changing course for awhile.
Cannyn is now well over 6 foot. He has started dealing in coins, and has made several partnerships that appear to be quite profitable.

Brystan is also 6 foot tall, and is in his freshman year at High school. My how time flies! I will be back to catch you up soon, I promise I will not make you wait another year and a half!

Would you drive 3 1/2 hours for this?

Chelan WA, Slide Waters

Yep, they named thier water slides

Slide Waters!

3 1/2 hours each direction.

I slid on 3 slides, banged every bone on every curve, then did this...

But really, the drive was so beautiful.

We didn't really care that it took so long to get there...

It was going home the same day after playing at the waterslides for 8 hours that killed us.

Oh, and the mountains were on fire...

So, to recap, 7 hours of driving, and 8 hours of sliding.

And this is what I saw in the morning....

Ahh, Summer!

Another project completed

This was an unscheduled project. It started with an odor.

The odor would not go away!

So, one day I took up the linoleum.

That worked....

For one day.

Then we took up the subfloor.

Which meant pulling out the toilet and cabinet.

Since we had to put in new flooring, I insisted on tile, so in goes the concrete backer board. Then the project became larger than Jon or I were capable of. Not because we are incapable, but because we are two very stubborn people who really should not undertake something of this magnitude together. So, We called in reinforcements. Enter My DADDY! Once we got the pattern and spacing worked out, He and Jon worked great as a team and cut and placed the entire floor in just a matter of hours. The next day, Jon took on the wall behind the toilet. With great confidence having been successful at the floor the night before. Look what a great job he did!There were a few bad paint choices on my part. Not willing to spend any money on paint, I shopped the garage and my parents paint supplies. The wall color was a taupe, but in fact, It turned out to be a purple. The cabinet was painted using the leftover paint from my parents kitchen cabinets. Beautiful, but unfortunately, it looked terrible with the tile. So I repainted everything. The cabinet got another coat using the brown color of mom and dads kitchen island. The walls, a green from Mom and Dads garage. I think it is in the front upstairs bedroom. It looks so much better now!I still need to do touch up paint and hit where we caulked around the tile, but This is what it all looks like today!

Just proving I did some of the work, This is my painting shirt! I actually have several of them since I often forget to change before jumping into a project.

Some of the things we have accomplished this spring,

Darian started driving...

And Graduated High School.

Since we are going to need lots of money for college, I have been cranking these babies out! I designed a new look, It is more of a book bag than a grocery bag. Thinking about college age people you know...

I got the yard cleaned up, The weeds were growing like a garden!

My brother installed my oak stairs.

And we threw a party!

With a few of his besties coming to celebrate with him!

It did not rain on the party, but it was cold, so that beautiful fire pit came in handy!

I have more catching up to do, but it looks like this post is all about graduation, so I will leave it at that.

Dear Employees:

As the CEO of this organization, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barack Obama is our President and that our taxes and government fees will increase in a BIG way.

To compensate for these increases, our prices would have to increase by about 10%. But since w...e cannot increase our prices right now due to the dismal state of the economy, we will have to lay off sixty of our employees instead.

This has really been bothering me since I believe we are family here and I didn't know how to choose who would have to go.

So, this is what I did. I walked through our parking lots and found sixty 'Obama' bumper stickers on our employees' cars and have decided these folks will be the ones to let go. I can't think of a more fair way to approach this problem. They voted for change...... I gave it to them.

I will see the rest of you at the annual company picnic.

My Weekend...

I spent Saturday working on the yard, I pulled weeds, then I dug holes. I moved shrubs, and I divided perrenials. I worked on a brick walkway going in on the side of the house. Then, on Sunday, I could barely move. SO...

I brought out my crochet hook, and tried something new.

I LOVE HANDMADE DISHCLOTHES.

I have several that I have used for YEARS!

and now, they look so ratty disgusting, that I should find more.

SO... Emboldened by my success with hats, I decided to try my hand at making a dishcloth.

My first attempt. I used too large of a hook, and this is almost the size of a towel...

BUT

I followed a pattern. Yep, all of the sudden it made sense, and I could follow written instructions.

WELL,

I did call my mom to clarify something, but it was an easy thing and once I was past it, it was smooth sailing.

SO,

I bought LOTS more yarn and made this one in about an hour...

And followed instructions again...

Then, I googled how to make a granny square and made this one.

WOW! Just over an hour because I kept taking the border apart. I see a goof, but it is for me, so I am leaving it alone. If I were selling them, I would be ripping that baby right apart again.

NOW

I have two more sides to finish on this one.

SOMEBODY STOP ME!!!!

Cannyn turned 15!!!!

Far cry from the teensy weensy 6lb 6oz baby I brought home!

I chose to share that picture because it ties into the List!

Boy is going to ROTC Leadership Camp in less than 2 weeks.

He came home and gave me a list of required items.

REQUIRED!!!!

Not anything that we owned...

7 BLACK shirts both long and short sleeved.

Black "Beanie" or knit stocking cap.

Thermals or Under Armor.

Sweat pants and Sweat Jacket, Black

Flip flops

Black coat / Windbreaker

Flashlight,

Lipbalm

Laundry bag

Laundry detergent,

First Aid kit,

Insect repellant

Watch,

Water bottle or Camel back.

Actually the list is longer, these are just the things I had to buy.

Oh, and since it is already spring here, and all the winter stuff is gone, it wasn't an easy task to find long sleeved shirts and a black beanie.

So, Mommy gave him a ball of yarn.

BUT

Yesterday, said ball of yarn turned into this....

And he LIKES it!

Instead of throwing parties this year, I decided to spend all the birthday budget on the boys. So, after he opened his "presents", we went to Red Robin for dinner and had them sing to him.

At first, he said he wanted to do Subway for dinner that night, (my wallet was rejoicing...) But at the last minute, changed his mind and we went to Red Robin... Do you know how much it costs to feed 4 MEN at RR?

Now, I am off to get my hair done...

Cleaning!

I found this great cleaning product called "Clutter~B~Gone. I was so excited to use it, especially on my living room.

I am afraid the kitchen and dining room needed another product called BLEACHITALL.

And the combination of both products worked wonders in the master bedroom.

Well, of course I am kidding. If it were really my house, all of the accessories would be purple! While I was immobile, I found a blog that kept drawing me back. I think the author is a native Spanish speaker because the older posts are all written in Spanish, then as she grew, she started writing in English. There is a google translator so her other followers can read it. There were 40 some odd pages of images of unique homes and castles and the interiors ranged from Swedish white to Colorful Country. I LOVED all the eye candy! (All of the above images are pulled from her blog.) If you check this blog out, make sure you have some time, because it sucks you in...

After the flu ran through me, then life got hectic. I finally have a handle on some of the messes that grew while I was down. BUT

I need to ask for prayer for one of my little girly people.

Nae is 13.

It is 9:00 p.m. here on the West Coast. I have been at the High school since 1:00 p.m. I worked the concessions, watched the show, then we tore down the entire set. The kids ROCKED the show!!! This was Darian's 4th year in the program. 5 shows per year, so this was his 20th time performing in this venue! He is so famous, he even does AUTOGRAPHS!!!

I did manage to get him to take a few minutes out of his busy schedule tonight to help me with one teeny tiny little project...

O.K. This is actually funny. Therese found me months ago! She is a follower and friend of my mother. When I started my blog, she kindly started following me so I would have a reader. She became one of my bestest bloggy friends, Always uplifting, and positive! I am actually quite jealous, because she has 3 boys, AND a brand new BABY GIRL!!!!!!!! She is only blogging on Sundays for lent, and hurried today to get her entry and blog about my giveaway.

Busted my budget.

Those of you who know me in real life know that I am coo-coo for anything Princess House!

I fell in love with it several years ago. My sister in law invited me to her Princess house party where I saw the Fantasia design for the first time. I bought a few pieces. I hosted a party. I became a consultant. I figured I wanted more Princess house, I would let Princess house buy it for me. Because I loved it so much I figured everyone I know would too.

I am not a sales person. I love doing parties, but I loved giving my stuff away too. I never made any money since I was giving away as much as I was making. Anything else coming in from Princess House bought me more princess house.

Are you familiar with them? Everyone was buying it in the 70's and 80's. Fantasia is a made up flower which looks sort of like a poinsettia. The pieces are pressed glass, canisters, dinnerware, bakeware, service pieces, drinkware. I LOVE IT ALL!

Well, with the turn in the economy last year, no one was having parties, so I let my business slack.

But I still love princess house.

SO - When I see it, I buy it, whether I really need it or not.

The other weekend I was at a Flea Market in Stanwood.

I wandered around trying not to let my disgust show on my face.

I really am a terrible snob.

Then, from across the room, I saw something. I hurried over to the booth, and found 4 of these...

Yeah, Fantasia cannisters. They are an older design, probably about 25 years old. They have not been making the cannisters in the square shape for several decades.

Then, when I was scooping these up, I also saw this.

More fantasia. That price tag says $2.00 Yeah, that is right! I got all 5 pieces for $10.00!!!!!

Now that it is all home, I decided I don't need all 4 canisters since I have all of this...

So, I think I will keep a few and send a few to some lucky blogger. I am trying to put my giveaway together in the midst of this hectic week. and I know two is an awkward number of canisters, so I will see how many you get.

The rest of the budget busters I found while junking at that time...

This mirror which you saw peeking out on the pedestal makeover post. It got the same treatment as the pedestal which I purchased on the same shopping trip but at different stores. Mirror, $25.00, Pedestal, $15.00

Only this time I brushed it with gold, cream and white craft paint after I painted it with the purple and white latex paints.

Ignore the wall please, obviously it is time to paint them again.

BUT WAIT, there is more!!!!

I came home and started working in the garden, I stopped to talk to the neighbor who was cleaning out her garage and ended up bringing these two beauties home.

I am looking at the harp like this...

Cannyn here. so Aunt Kris commented on my last post that I should post us cleaning the house.

So here it is.

The story: my parents and brothers are at the Jazzmine Dinner Show and I stayed home sick. I was sitting on the couch (watching the AMA Supercross races) and looked into the yuck. I thought to myself "I've gotta do something about this." so I did.

A Quickie

I ended up not having any clients today, so I grabbed one of the treasures I found while out junking this weekend...

I have always loved these pillasters, and when I found one at one of the thriftiques that was not outrageously priced, I decided to go ahead an buy it. (I was really hard on the budget this weekend.)

But, It was DIRTY,

and dinged up, and had a curly cue that had been chipped off. So, I grabbed some tools, and...

Went to work on it. First I cleaned it then I used the vinyl spackle to fill cracks, nicks and build up the broken curly cue...

Then I painted every single nook and cranny with my artist brush...

PURPLE of course!

(don't worry, I haven't lost my mind!)

Using a regular paint brush, I painted it white, leaving the purple to peek out from all it's little hiding places. BUT being one who could not leave well enough alone, I went and rubbed silver craft paint all over it to see if I liked it...

NOPE! I don't... Another coat of white over that and TA DA!

This was the broken curly cue.

I am loving my peekaboo purple! Speaking of peekaboo....

Something in the corner is trying to peek into todays post... It is another treasure I found this weekend. But it is just going to have to wait it's turn before you get to see it...

I am thinking it wants to live right here....

Well, maybe it wasn't such a quickie because now it is time to make dinner.

This weekend is the opening weekend for Jazzin Around the World.

Which is my oldest son's Jazz group doing every genre of music with dancing and acting and it is a 3 hour show...

So, If you live in Western Washington and want a really fun evening of music (They are phenomenal!)

Hello My name is Cannyn Morris and I have hacked my mothers blog to show what we do when her back is turned.

He has earned the award of the MIR (Most Improved Rider) award.

He used to be chicken to take big jumps all last year but the first day of riding this year he started jumping them on the second lap he rode. But this is my own opinion.

Darian was not out today but this is him last year.

As I told you, I am really liking the look of white furniture lately. I went to the juck stores, but still cannot find anything worth bringing home. SO, I wandered around the house... Hmm, who is my next victim?

Candidate #1

The ugly television stand.

Candidate #2, the equally ugly bookcase housing the stereo...

With it's fake woodgrain plastic stuff and lots of dents and dings.

And the winner is...

The fake wood bookcase. You can see that I started stripping off all the torn or gouged plastic woodgrain from the pitiful thing.

A coat of primer, and the same white paint from the fireplace and Don't forget the piece of plywood, some moulding, and the SAW!!!

Guess what? I figured out how to do moulding cuts at 45* angels!

Taking it for a test drive!

Nailed, puttied, caulked, primed, painted, and put in a new place.

Who would have thought something so ugly could turn out decent enough to keep?

I had to give the plant a haircut to fit it here. So, into a jug of water it went. Anyone local want the cutting?

Of course, I put it right next to the chair I recovered in Dropcloth, and the Fireplace I built the surround for. Ok. Now hold on tight, I am going to spin you around the room. 13 X 20 and filled to the gills...

Yes, you do see my walls are different colors. Cream, tan, brown, and of course, PURPLE!

Looks like Mrs. Trudy's Teacart is the only thing I haven't touched in this room yet. (No, Mother, I am not!)

That is DIY network on the television, and an old(er) air purifier system Jon dragged home....

A very Cake weekend

My weekend was full of Valenitnes. I had my adopted neices again this weekend. I had planned on making cupcakes with them for Valentines day. I bought a cake mix and frosting and colorings and let them decorate thier cupcakes and eat it right away. I had the added bonus of a little man who stole my heart and was one of my favorite Valentines.

Our weather was slightly less than pleasant on Sunday, so all the running, jumping and squealing that happens with two five year olds and a seven year old, two thirteen year olds, and a fifteen year old all happened indoors. The boys complained all weekend long about the noise, but didn't mind antagonizing the girls into squeals whenever possible. Monday was bright and beautiful, so all the noise went outside. I even had time to mop the kitchen. Three loads of muddy clothes and several baths kept me busy even though all the commotion was outside the best part of the day.

We decided to have dinner together with Mommy and her boyfriend. So, I told Jahnae shou could make a dessert. She perused the cookbooks and settled on a white cake with cream cheese frosting. Then she got really creative.

Her little sisters were telling her how to do it...

Three dollar fix.

Thank you to everyone who told me how to fix my couch. I went to Jo-Anne fabric to get some webbing. Two and a quarter yards at $.79 per yard. Using my 40% coupon, it came to something like $2.22.

At least I have a reason to pull out my little staple gun.

I flipped the couch over and ....ran the webbing over and under the springs. just to make sure it didn't pull apart, I stapled the snot out of it... At least 20 staples on each end! I hope that stands up to the FLOPPING of the boys...

BUT

The front still sags.

SO flip back over and take a looksie...

Very thin knotty plywood strip held up by two corners of a 2 / 4. Hmm,

OFF those little corners come.

and in goes a golden replacement.

Seriously, this gem has been hiding in the garage for two years since we helped build the Aladdin float Darian's Sophomore year... (He was Aladdin).

Out come the big guns. Cannyn (AKA The big gun!) and The air compressor/ nailer combination.

That looks sturdier. Now for the final test...

Looks straight. not sinking to the floor. Maybe I will make slipcovers after all.

( My mother said just watch craigs list and find a better couch. Maybe that would work too.)

Mom, don't look!

I begged these tables off of my mother a few years ago.

And while they are absolutely fine just how they are, I finally got up the nerve to do what I wanted to do when I first got them.

Sorry, Mom, I know you liked them how they were.

Since we are having such nice weather, I sanded one of the tables down yesterday.

Then I used spray primer and paint to make it white.

One can of spray primer and two cans of spray paint ( I do not recommend WalMart paint)

I took a fine grit sandpaper to it to remove the drips, and ended up with the very popular distressed look.So, I rubbed stain all over the piece, then wiped it all off.

Which gave me a piece of furniture that looked like I got it from my father in law or my grandmother Margaret. ( both chain smokers).

So, I got the paint I used on the fireplace, and brushed it all over the distressed, stained, and spray painted piece.

Using a dry brush technique so there is still stain peeking through, but cleaning up the solid areas. And allowing the distressed areas to have just a little layer of paint to tone them down too.

I am happy with the look. It matches my new fireplace.

And my reappholstered chairs. And the side table in the above picture.

Yeah, This looks good to me!

The sister table is going to wait awhile for it's makeover.

My friend Joyce stopped in today, and we came up with an idea for a bench in the dining room.

Since I really want to get the kitchen underway, I am going to fly with it.

We talked about chair rail, picture boxes, and other molding ideas, but finally decided on a tufted headboard look for the back wall, and a storage bench beneath.

AND she has the bench to GIVE to me for this project. It needs some TLC, but Free is my favorite price.

I need help!

This is the couch in the living room. Saggy Baggy Elephant all over again! The fabric is still in decent condition, the Pillows are floppy, slouchy and frumpy, OOps, I forgot the picture with the pillows.

There it is, cat, laundry, and all.

A new couch is NOT in the budget, and I am thinking of trying my hand at slipcovering it.

Sorry it is so dark. I just snapped the picture and it is dark in here.

BUT

The darn thing sags! When you sit down you are almost knee to chin.

Booty to floor.

Falling on whoever is sitting on the other side.

I went online to find out how to fix it, but this is all they had to say,

1. Take off the bottom fabric, check to see if any springs are disconnected, if so, reconnect them.

Check, all springs in place...

2. Check for broken supports.

Notice the second support is my OAK FLOOR!!! No breaking that one!

There is one broken board up in the back.

But I don't see how that is making the bottom sag.

So, back to the WORLD WIDE WEB, to see the next and only other suggestion is ...

Stick a board in it.

Yeah, done already. NOT helping!

So, Help me please! What do I do? I have so many other projects to finish that I don't really want to spend much money to fix this, and I don't see it being replaced for several years.

Spring dreams

With the warm weather this past week, I am dreaming about my next project in the yard. Add to that, Yesterday Brystan and I went to the Northwest Flower and Garden show, and I am raring to go!

My dreams are growing larger and larger every day.
Last summer, we added this to the back yard,

And By we, of course I mean HIM

Some of the things I am thinking about adding...

The yard slopes enough, I could add stone stairs.

\ I would be able to sneak some boulders out of the commons, all I would need is a bobcat for a day.

More stone steps...

These are a little more rustic, but I LOVE real stone!

There is always room for another patio, I love the way this one curls around itself.

And since I am dreaming, I would like to redo the planting area between the street and the sidewalk like this!

There is still a side yard to be tackled. I think I like the look of this one...

But, February 7th is still to early to do much out there.

Even if it has been 60* here.

But, I am still working on the idea file for a few weeks.

Then, I am heading out!!!

Tonight, I am just going to give you the information about me...

I don't know how much of birth order and horoscope are true, but I am the second child of six. I am both a rebel,(LEO) and a Nurturer (Oldest girl) My brother (The Only Son) is oldest. Then me, Followed by Angie, Kris (What's Next?) Tricia (It is my Crazy Life) and Gina (A handful of Life).

I am very good friends with all of my siblings. Our children are all best cousin friends, and some of us live in the same neighborhood.

My parents were married at 18 and are still married (45 years this spring).

I spent part of my childhood in Anchorage Ak, and part of it in Washingtons State.

I got the heck out of Dodge when I graduated High School. See Ya Cow Town!!! You know, I moved back 9 years ago so My children would have the priveledge of walking in town, going to friends houses and "hanging out" without having to fear thier lives.

I became a Massage therapist 5 years ago, and I love what I do, I am really good at it, but I HATE the paperwork.

I work in my Fathers Chiropractic office.

I have 3 sons,
Darian is a high school Senior,
Cannyn is a Freshman,
Brystan is in 7th grade.
for the most part, they are great kids!
We struggle as a family like most do,
with obedience, attitude, and school.

Today, I called the school and excused Darian for the morning so I could "take him to the doctor".
I hope lightning doesn't strike me down!

Why?
Because he is in a music group that practices 5 hours a day right now. Yesterday, he came home and sat down on the couch.
I took his shoes off and covered him up before I went to bed. This morning when I woke everyone up, he was in a panic.
Every day, he is at school for 13 hours, then he has dinner and does his homework. Occasionally, he has a friend over, but mostly, he is home doing his homework. Yesterday, he fell asleep, so no homework was completed.

So, right now, he is at the kitchen table doing homework.
Not at the doctor.
Not in class, although he will need to make up whatever he missed today.
I don't do this often. In fact, in order to stay home from school, you had better be puking or have a temperature over 100*.
(I have one who pushes this.)
But, this one is trying so hard to get a drivers license (momma said 3.5 to drive.) and wants to go to college next year.
So, Lightning bolt or not, I lied to his school.
Have you ever?

Yesterday, I went to the trift stores.
I had a few items in particular I was looking for.
Like some type of shelving to go here.

And a Headboard to make a bench to go Here

And some plates to display here.

So, What did I come home with?

When I go to the thrift stores, I try very hard to leave the snob in the van, but somehow, she keeps creeping in after me.

I am thinking that the rule for thrift stores is like the rule for garage sales, Always go to a neighborhood more affluent than yours.

Not within my driving range. There is a Goodwill and Value Village in the neighboring town, a ten minute drive south,

and another in Mount Vernon which is a 30 minute drive north.

Between here and Mount Vernon are a few thrift stores in Stanwood / Camano, and some Junktiques between here and there, but they usually charge more than thrift stores.

ARRGH!

I gave up and came home and worked in the yard. It was almost 60* ( IN FEBRUARY!)

So, I cleaned out winter debris from two beds.

There is lots of new growth in the beds already, I hope we don't get a freeze!

Remember all those silly things your mother used to say in order to make you think? Mine said all kinds of things, I now call those Evyisms. And I find myself using them with my own boys. Not that it is a bad thing, My Mommy is one smart lady!
So, Since everyone in blog land is jumping off the bridge with chalk board paint, does that mean that I should?

I found this great frame at the local junktique, I think it was about $2.99

And it had no picture, just the cardboard backing.

So, I thought for about 1/2 a second, and knew that it wanted to be a chalkboard.

So, I found a thin piece of wood ( broken dresser drawer)

And went to the garage and used this (all by myself)

I spray painted the frame, using my favorite color,

And then, I used my newly perfected method of paint on, wipe off to cover it in cream craft paint.

Leaving me with peekaboo purple! LOVE IT!!!

I spray painted the board I cut to fit the frame using chalkboard paint. and Viola!

Those of you who are my facebook friends remember my rant about needing a sign that says something about not having a maid, Well, that inspired this little project!

Now I can write anything I want, and change it when the mood strikes.

I am thinking,

"We don't have a maid... Clean up after yourself!"

Accomplish something every day!

Shopping, My Favorite Pastime!

No, Literally, I am taking you shopping at Favorite Pastimes in Arlington Wa.

I stop in every week, even if I am not buying (or not intending to anyways).

It is owned by my friend Marian, and she or her daughter (my new best helper) are there every day.

Nice Family!

We went to high school together, I think she looks younger!

Anyways, Marian bought the store last year, and has added her own touch to it.

so, come in and look around.

Oh, darn, you cannot see that this is a possum bellied cabinet.

I guess my photography skills are a little lacking.

One of the things I LOVE about Marians store is that she has so many items from local artists.

This is called a fret piece. The artist carves it by hand, no lasers, and he frets over it until he feels it is finished.

Real life gets in the way!

Oh, how I love showing you the After pictures, So I think I will!

They are so much happier than the Before Pictures!

That is the floor of my spare bedroom.

The room that is supposed to by MINE!

I want it to be my creaft room, Sewing space, Scrapbook room.

BUT IN REALITY, it is the don't know where this goes, throw it in there room.

Does it look any less disgusting if the picture is tiny?

In an attempt to clean up my act, I installed a closet system on the wall.

There is a table I painted white a few years ago. I thought it had great legs, but the top is BAD!

If I had room on it, I could use my sewing machine there!

This is going to seem like I am changing the subject for a moment, but you will get it in a minute.

I tell my sons there is always a way to earn money, you just have to be willing to do WORK!

People will often pay to have done what they don't have time or ability to do.

I don't have the ability to organize.

I have lots of time, but It just isn't easy for me to do. I get distracted, (SQUIRREL)

Remember It took me TWO DAYS to get my kitchen cleaned and organized.

and another to uncover my dining room table after cleaning and organizing my kitchen.

As a massage Therapist, my work has slowed as people are trying to meet their deductibles.

But, I still have more than most, and especially since most of my young friends cannot even get work in the fast food, retail entry level jobs. I know it isn't my responsibility to save the world, but I can help one person at a time right?

This is a sweet young friend in my life.

She works part time in her mothers store, but doesn't have a steady income, so the other day when she asked if she could do some cleaning for me, I thought for a split second and agreed.

We worked together today, organizing, labeling, sorting tossing, bagging, removing, relocating, and hanging all the extra pictures stacked, stuffed, and slipped into that room.

I found some real treasures in the bottom of that mess.

It was hiding under the stuff boys have outgrown. It once had a place in my living room, but three rambunctious boys, it didn't last in there. Now it lights my work table.

really, it just looks like alot, It is probably enough to make 3 or 4 tote bags.

Notice the plethera of pictures in the room? I like to change the pictures in the living room ALOT!

Well, Amber pulled them out of the piles on the floor and started hanging them up around the room.

DUH, Walls for pictures? Who woulda thunkit?

Alright, I think I got the better end of the deal.

I paid her a VERY fair wage, and now, my room is ready for me to start a project.

If I need to stop in the middle of a project, I can just close the door.

I don't have to clear the table to serve dinner.

YAY ME!

Speaking of new projects, I am thinking of one that uses both the plastic bags, and the sewing machine. What is it? You are just going to have to wait and see!

Dreaming of change

This is my house. Well, it is an exact twin built by the same builder. A 2000 square foot split level built in 2000.
We were not in agreement over it, but it was the biggest and bestest house we could afford.
It also had the added bonus of being in the same neighborhood as my parents.
The boys were tiny and our house is directly next door and in front of community space, so we only have one next door neighbor, and a playground on the other side.
There was a huge drawback to this house though,

Like the layout of the kitchen! See the pantry, it is connected to the wall beside the refrigerator by a drywall beam. Like a fake doorway. The dishwasher is located in the island. What this diagram doesn't show is how if you open the dishwasher like this, you have to stick your booty in the cupboard behind you to stand near the sink to load it. And to unload it, you have to stack the dishes on the counter, close the dishwasher and then put them away.

Needless to say, it did not stay like this too very long...

About 6 years ago, I used an insurance settlement check, my dad, and my sister Angie to make it look like this.

By taking uff the island (peninsula?) and pushing the dishwasher and cabinet against the wall, I opened up the floor plan to give more room for loading and unloading the dishes.

Then, we removed the pantry and put it back up reusing the 2/4's in an alcove beside the refrigerator on the living room side. Where the original pantry was, we added a pony wall so we wouldn't have to move electricity. There is a plug in on each side of the pony wall and two light switches in the kitchen/dining areas.

In the kitchen, I added three new cabinets in an L shaped island. They are not an exact match to the existing cabinets, but the closest that were in my budget. Then, my big splurge...

I pulled up the linoleum (kitchen) and carpet (dining room) and installed oak floors.

Looks great, fits 6 people in the kitchen at a time, gives way more storage and counter space.

What could possibly be wrong with it?

When I reconfigured the kitchen I "borrowed" 11 inches from the dining room. You know, it is less than a foot, what difference does that make?

Even with the narrowest dining table, there is no room to walk around when everyone is seated, I actually go around the wall, into the living room, back into the kitchen or dining room if I have to go through.

The cabinet over the dishwasher is not centered, andlooks funny where it is.

Then there is the brass fixture which is no longer centered in the room.

And not one, but two seams in the laminate countertops.

and the fact that the wood floor is NOT under any of the cabinets.

I need to change something, I need to put more room in the dining room. I am willing to sacrifice one of the cabinets.

I am very tired of the oak cabinets, but the oak floor stays!

Got any ideas for me? Since I did the fireplace, I am interested in white, traditional, and crown moulding.

Oh, and my budget does not exist, so I am going to bee squeeking this out $50 at a time. ( except the floor) craigslist, and garage sales are my friends.

And so are you, so I would love to hear what you have to suggest!

A tisket a tasket, a grocery bag basket.

My sister Gina called me last week to ask a favor.
We do that,
It usually involves moving furniture or building stuff.
This time it was for a donation to her MOPS auction.
This year they are doing a "green" theme.
Not green the color,
Green the ecopsychobabble.
Yeah, I recycle, I wrote all about it here.
A Basket full of earth friendly items is what she was thinking.
And the basket should be made of recycled material.
Which is why she called me.
I have made bags, I have made a rug, I have even made a hat for fun.
But a basket? That has to stand up on its own,
It has to be visually appealing, so people will use it in public rooms.
"I don't know if I can make a basket."
"I will play around and see if it is do-able."

This is what I came up with.

Another couple of hundred bags NOT going overseas to be "recycled".

A little recognition for my bags. (I know people are going to ask my sister if they can order one.)

Hm, not a bad couple of afternoons for me!

Thanks, Safeway, Kohls, Lowes, Target, and Fred Meyer for providing me with free materials.

If I were selling this, I would charge about $30 for it because of the time involved.

Now, I understand the store has sold out of my tote bags, so I had better keep on going.

And Easter is just around the corner, so I need to perfect the basket for sales on Easter baskets.

Blood drive.

My friend and her family wanted to do more.

So they arranged a blood drive in memory of their brother.

They were told they needed to have 28 people willing to donate in order to get the blood bank truck to come up.

I believe at last count there were 58 people who donated.

My mother made cookies.

Cannyn and I made cookies.

My sister Angie and her husband came to donate, and Mom watched Olivia who was very worried about what would happen to her while her mommy and daddy gave away thier blood.

It was nice to see people from our church there donating blood, as well as people stopping right off the street.

It was set up with appointments for two people every half hour, but had spaces available for drop ins.

Each hour seemed to be filled up!

So, I continue to be amazed over the grace this family has shown in the violent death of a loved one.

Every step they make just shows that What the enemy has meant for evil, God will work for good.

I know this isn't the usual decorative fluff and stuff I have been blogging about lately, I just have been so moved by all that my friend and her siblings have done out of their grief.

My eldest and I were talking about this last night. I told him I don't think I would be able to show such grace if it were one of my boys who was murdered. I would be so filled with hatred and revenge.

So, Carbajal family, You are teaching so many of us such valuable lessons.

Local woman found alive in Haiti

A woman who graduated from our local highschool was found alive in Haiti in the bottom of a collapsed building last week. She was doing missionary work teaching English. After graduating from college, she committed to a two year engagement with her missionary group. Her family is well known in Arlington, and my oldest son is friends with her brother. The news was heartening and made the front page of our newspaper. But sadly, the news was released on the same day as the funeral of another Western Washington woman of the exact same age and similar situation. We will continue to pray for the families of other people with friends and loved ones in the earthquake zone. And for this young womans recovery from injuries she suffered in the earthquake.
On a personal note, I want to thank God for the miracles he continues to provide in our lives. Even in such horrible times as these, we see there is hope in him!

Blood drive

This Saturday, at Arlington City hall. It is in memory of Elliot Carbajal, the man murdered in town in December. Out of their sorrow, his siblings have organized this event to help others. Just like donating his organs, they continue to do good after such an awful event! This event is by appointment, so If you have time, let me know, I will help you schedule your time with his sister. There are several time slots available.

I Worked on THIS

Nasty isn't it?

You see, while I was busy building my fireplace surround and mantel,

NO ONE was cleaning up the kitchen!

Not the able bodied 44 year old man,

Not the able bodied 17 year old almost man,

Not the able bodied almost 15 year old man sized person,

Not the able bodied almost 13 year old man sized person,

NO ONE!

My parents came by last night while I was trying to clean it up a bit, and Mom had some good Ideas for organizing it a bit better, so I dug in, and tore it up a bit more.

Now all the baking stuff is together.

I weeded out and organized the spice cabinet. I don't remember when I bought half the spices, so out they went.

And this mess gained a few more shelves.

I USED THE CHOP SAW ALL BY MYSELF!

But, I let Cannyn do the actual construction, electric drills, nailing guns, and levels are his favorite toys.

Now it looks like this!

I used the pine board taken off of the first attempt at the mantel. and some bits and pieces of the trim my brother in law sent home with me that I didn't use for the mantel.

( I couldn't resist sticking the camera in the pantry with Cannyn and snapping a picture while he worked)

Darian came home from practice while I was washing the inside of the refridgerator, so he decided to pitch in and help me. He wiped the freezer, tossed last summers popsicles and turkey burgers, and vacummed the coils for me.

In short, if it has a surface, it was cleaned today.

I even decorated above the cabinets!

( After Darian stood on the counters and sprayed and wiped all the grime from up there.)

Hmm. Just how long do you think it will stay that way?

Shall I take bets?

Oh, every thing that was removed from the kitchen is sitting on the dining room table,

Tomorrow, I sort it, and toss, and donate whatever doesn't belong anymore.

Oh, and I guess I should pay the bills I found in that mess!

I guess today was a productive day, even though I almost spent the whole day in one room of the house!

Fireplace update

My Fireplace is ready to show off.!

It took awhile to finish this project, but finally, I have the after photos...

I never wanted to decorate my house in white because I have three grubby man sized children.

BUT I LOVE THE WAY THIS LOOKS!

I cannot wait to link this to some of the before and after parties.

The chair I reapholstered using dropcloth in the fall.

My father bought all the MDF when he remodeled the office, My husband dreagged it all home for some project or other, but since it stayed in the garage, that meant it was fair game. I bought the crown molding, two pieces at $16 each. I also bought the stencils, paint, and spackle for the emblem, so that was another $20 the stain was in our supplies, and I decorated using stuff from my house, so All together, Besides the time given by my beautiful Sister(s) and all the time I spent getting the stain / paint ratio right, this project came in just over $50.

YEAH!!!

But, I can't show it yet, I still have to stain it. instead, I am going to show you what Darian made for his Jazzmine class.

Every year, they make a sign, either by themselves, or in small groups. Darian chose to make his by himself, and ended up doing it VERY last minute, he finished it this morning in time to take it to school and turn it in.

BUT

His teacher liked it so much, he left it plugged in all day,

The lights behind the head melted the hot glue,

The head fell off.

I guess I had better pick up some gorilla glue or some epoxy this weekend.

We learn through our trials right?

And of course, it is screwed on, puttied up, caulked in and primed.

I have to find the screws, cut the caulk, and take it off!

Dad said he has more MDF, and Bryan said the mantel needs to be two boards thick.

So, my next day off will be repairing this before I can move forward.

The frame is built, holes are filled, and everything is sanded.I am using wall spackle to do a decorative treatment in the boxes. Using a stencil, I fill the voids with spackle, trowel it evenly, and remove the stencil.Jon came home from work in time to help Angie with the Crown Moulding. We made a few mistakes yesterday, and had to buy some new Crown today, But since that is the only thing I have bought for this project, *oops, I bought the spackle, and stencils too.*I think that is not a bad deal.

My fireplace, original to the house, 5 1/2 inches Drywall, surrounding the tile.

I Hate it. It is useless. You cannot display anything on it at all, well nothing interesting anyways...I have been asking for a more traditional mantel and surround for eight of the nine years we have owned this house, but for some reason, it gets pushed to the back burner year after year...

NO MORE!

Today, I tore off the trim, (with my handsome little helper!)

And My little sister came over to help me by running the big scary power tools. (I can use the little, less scary nailer gun.)Eight years ago, I bought this piece of dentil crown moulding, Now, it is finally getting used!

And this is where we stopped for the day. Notice, Darius did not clean up his tools either!

Tomorrow, we are going to my friends brothers funeral (December post) then coming back to work on it again,

This year, our room has something we haven't had in the past years we have been here on Christmas...

A fold out couch, Enough surfaces for every one to sleep on! In the past, Darian has always volunteered to make a bed on the floor. But this year, he gets to sleep on a bed or the couch. Two people to a bed, One on the couch. FUN!Another thing not available to them at home, The swimming pool. It is open until 11 PM, so they got a good swim in last night after we came back from Auntie Spectaculars house.

We are traveling this year. It is the "inlaw" Christmas. So, my brother and sisters are spending the Christmas apart. And my parents have saved their Christmas budget for a trip to tropical climes!!!

We are opening our gifts at home tomorrow, then Wednesday morning, packing it in the car and driving for 4 hours. Once we reach our destination, we are checking into a Hotel. We have found it easier to stay in a hotel than other choices. The stockings will travel with us for some of that "Christmas Magic" on Christmas morning. 5 people, two beds, one room! We will need the magic!

Our pets have a "fill in" house mother.

We are stopping by to see the girls on the way south.

My sis in law has had some health issues (scares) this year.

We will enjoy our time with her. The boys especially. She is affectionately named

"Auntie Spectacular"!

So, as we count down the days,

Thank you for you comments, both on my blog, and my mothers.

I got an e-mail from another blogger who has space in a little store in Stanwood, The store is Poppyseeds.

The Blogger is Kennedy from Retreat by Kennedy.

She is having a sale. 50% off her items in the store.

I was excited about that and said I was on my way,

Then all the rest of the stuff happened!

And I didn't have the time or the energy to do it.

And she visited my blog.

And she e-mailed me loving comments about the situation.

And she recognized a little something I had purchased from her space at Poppyseeds.

This guy! She calle him "vintage dancing Santa" so from here on out, that is his name!

I have a confession to make,

Vintage Dancing Santa was taken off the tree and put away last weekend.

My baby girl LOVED him, and kept playing with him, and he is a little fragile so, I hid him while she wasn't looking! she actually redecorated my tree three or four times too!

SO- If you are local, and if you still have something amazing to find for that special friend who likes quaint little shop boutique type of gifts (ME) go visit Kennedy, then print off the coupon, and head to Stanwood. (Just before you turn off the highway to my sisters house) and pick up that one of a kind I thought about you when I was there gift!!!

Maybe you will see me there too!

My little Utopia was seriously shaken up this week.

In my tiny little cow town, a well known family is greiving tonight.

Some seriously deranged men attacked and killed their son/brother/uncle.

HERE!!! IN MY TOWN!!!

He was on life support for most of the week while the family came to terms with their loss.

Yes, the seriously deranged men were caught.

And now will be tried with murder...

But the story doesn't end here...

Through this tragedy many lives will be changed forever.

The family donated all his organs so others can live.

A specific organ was offered to my cousin since they share the same rare blood type,

But the hospital said they already had a recipient that had to receive it.

So, tonight I ask that you pray for two specific things.

The first is the family who just lost a beloved member.
That they will find peace at this holiday season.
That they will remember with joy the son/brother/uncle they just lost.
That they may some day find forgiveness for the seriously deranged men who ended this life.
(I had a difficult time even typing that sentence)
And that Those who did receive the organs will survive the operations and go on to live full and happy lives.

Second for my cousin.
Who will die without a transplant.
Who has 4 children.
Who Loves the Lord with all her heart.
Who knows her future...
That she be given a chance to see her children grow.
That she be there for graduations, weddings and baby showers.
(because every mommy wants these things)

And That in all this pain and suffering God be glorified!

And some inspiration the LORD has provided...

It has been alot of fun changing things up this year, and I have to find all my greenery still. SOMEONE says he can't find it...

I let the boys have fun putting up the Christmas lights this year.

They may have gone a little overboard!

O.k. I am just kidding, We went to Warm Beach (Stanwood WA) to the Lights of Christmas display grounds.

TWICE!!!

The first night, Thursday was for this...

Arlington High School Jazzmine performs there every year. This year, Darian and the Sextet performed their award winning rendition of Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. Darian is the boy in the center. Second shortest...

The second trip was with the girls. I had picked them up Friday night (120 miles round trip) and all day Saturday we worked on Christmas crafts, but they wanted to know if it was time to go to the lights...

Once we got there, I took 3 pictures and the camera battery died.

So, I dug Darian's camera out of my purse and took another picture, It's battery died!!!

I did not get a picture of the youngest on the pony ride...

I did not get a picture of the two youngest on Santa's lap,

I did not get a picture of the four of them riding the train,

I did not get a picture of the talking spruce telling them jokes...

By the way, Do you know why Santa planted three gardens?

So he could HO HO HO!!!

It was so cold, we hurried through the light exhibits.

Even though it was a quick trip through the lights, the girls enjoyed it and talked about it all day Sunday.

I also took them to church.

The middle one kindof freaked out last time they were here,

She did NOT want to go to church.

So, We didn't...

This time we made it there, They played in sunday school and watched a video on the birth of Jesus.

She did fine...

And IT SNOWED!!!

But nobody put the cameras on the charger, so no pictures of them playing in the snow.

We drove them home early this afternoon,

They want to come back next week!!!

(I said maybe next month!)

I still need to find more Christmas presents for them.

Maybe I will pick up a few for my own children as well.

Look what Nae Made!

This afternoon, Jon and I drove down to south Seattle to pick up the girls for the weekend. Their mother has finals all week next week, and we wanted to spend some time together before the holidays. I wanted to have Mom come too, but she needs some time to study for her finals. She was very excited because someone had given her a Christmas tree and some ornaments to use this year.

BUT

In an almost overlooked statement said to one of the girls, there are no Christmas stockings.

Correction

There were no stockings.

After we put the little girls to bed, Nae and "Auntie" went to work.

We traced one of the boys stockings.

Onto felt. The felt was bags I used when wrapping my Princess House products up for traveling to and from parties,

Not getting any bookings for parties,

I don't need the bags as much as the girls need stockings.

(and coats, and socks, and jammies, and jeans, and...)

Having already spent my budget buying a few of the above mentioned necessities, I needed to use what I had.

I asked Nae if she had ever used a sewing machine, and she said no.

So I asked if she wanted to. She said yes.

I walked her through the steps of sewing the stockings together, and she did a really good job. Only one place I am going to have her go back and fix in the morning. But for never having used a machine before, she was a PRO!

(look how closely she is watching her stitches.)

And Her finished product. We sewed a hanger on it with a wide zigzag stitch, then using the same stitch, sewed an ornament I had gotten at the dollar store to attach to presents.

Isn't she beautiful? Her 13th Birthday is two days after Christmas, so Auntie has to find a special something for that too!

After Nae went to bed, Auntie whipped these other two up.

For the little sisters.

Mommy needs one too, but I am going to let the little girls "help" with that.

I have found that one of the best ways to combat my seasonal depression is to think of the needs of others,

It doesn't have to be as grand as making an entire Christmas for another family, but just looking to the needs of others and not thinking about what I may or may not "need" has made me much happier this year.

AND

Even though they have so little, their mommy is doing the same thing by working a blanket drive for the homeless in her area.

I am going to go wash some of our extra blankets now.

I LOVE CHRISTMAS!

( I just read this post and was feeling so smug about my accomplishment. Right up to that last picture. See it?)

twas two weeks before Christmas

Twas two weeks before Christmas, and I couldn't care.
The only gifts that were purchased, was something to wear.
No cookies were baking, no scent in the air.
No signs that Saint Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were man sized, and so were their beds.
While visions of electronic devices danced in their heads.
Mommy was working almost every day, only to come home
and this is what they say.

Mother what is for dinner, I need a snack,
I step into the kitchen and am completely taken aback.
The dishes are piled in the sink without care.
The peanut butter and jelly are just lying right there.

Dish rags are thrown in piles on the floor.
I pick one up to peek and see spillings galore
You know I began to make such a clatter
With 3 man sized offspring, wide eyed, saying mother what is the matter?

The laundry is spread on the couch like new fallen snow.
There are socks lying about, dirty or clean I do not know.
When what to my wondering eye should appear?
But the arrival of "Daddy" dear.

He walks in the door his shoes does remove.
And leaves them lying starting his groove.
Up the stairs he comes while working his lungs.
The names of his children flying off his tongue

Now Darian, Now Cannyn, Now Brystan
You too! Get out here and pick up your book bags and shoes.
Now Darian, take out the trash, Now Cannyn The recycle
Now Brystan go out an pick up the Bicycle.
To the garage you go, all three of you.
And while you are down there, clean it up too.
NOW! RIGHT NOW!
I have told you all!

As loud crickets chirp, so as not to obey,
Two man sized offspring turn around to play.
They have heard this blustering a million times before,
and know they are safe to be told two times more.

With a warning glance at them and their brother.
I told them I did not want another
evening of chaos and anger and strife,
They looked at me funny, saying, "That is life"

Now the oldest was home between school and practice that night,
He looked around and seeing the fight.
He picked up the trash and the recycle,
went to the garage and put away the bicycle.

He spent a few minutes putting things away with care.
Knowing that mother was pulling her hair.
Washing the dishes was next on his list.
All the while he was doubling his fist.

Our lives are so busy, there is so much to do,
We need to do homework and tidy up too.
Our droll little house is bursting at the seams
with toys on the floor, and dirty laundry in streams
starting in the bedrooms and flowing down the hall,
There just isn't enough time for mother to do it all.
You would think that someone would care,
With holidays approaching, and winter in the air.

The tree is decorated, in gold, green and red,
With bows, balls, figurines and Santa's head.
A constant reminder of pleasures to come,
You would think that someone would care, Maybe just one!

So just days before Christmas I survey this dump.
Looking at the man sized offspring lying like a lump.
I don't feel like shopping, No not at all.
And so I have yet to enter a mall.

Two weeks is all there is left to wait.
Two weeks is all until that date.
Now clean it up, clean it up,
Clean it up all,
Or this Christmas I am giving it away all!!!

Cheap "New" wreath

In keeping with my new theme for Christmas decorations this year, I had to remake my wreath, so off came all the Purple flowers and ribbons, And on with the Red, Gold, and Green Santa theme! First up, I made a new bow. I had this ribbon from several years back, and so, it being the right colors, ON WITH IT!
I had thought about making one of those wreaths out of ornaments like I have seen on EVERY blog this season, then I thought, NO! (I have seen it on every blog, that makes my rebellious spirit rise up and scream!)
Now, I have been on a quest to find the right Santa stuff for my tree, and at the Dollar Store, I found these reindeer and more, on sale for $.88 each. With three of them on this wreath, so far I have about $5.00 because I found the red and gold ornaments at the thrift store.
I took some of your advice from the ornament wreath, and hot glued the tops onto the balls, that way they won't fall apart if nudged by one of my man sized offspring...

First, I laid everything out finding my balance. I purposely offset everything. I am usually the one who does symmetrical designs, so this went off the charts of normal for me...

Once I had everything where I wanted it, I just wired it on using my brand new spool of florist wire. I bought it the night before, but had to go hunting for it. I found it, pliers, and strange wire creations in Brystan's room...

Almost done...

Man I love that kid, he always looks around to see what I have done next, then makes sure to stroke my ego before heading to his next thing.

Today was one of those rare sunny days in the PNW, so I took advantage of the weather and ran out on the back deck to spray paint the frames I am using to replace the one Cannyn broke and it's twin...
But, of course, this is after 3:00 in the afternoon. No sooner do I put the second coat on, and the sun went down. With the absence of the sun, all of the sudden it is freezing cold and my paint isn't drying.

So I did what any sane person does, I brought it in the kitchen to dry.

Sorry Family, you know how mommy gets!

Some Christmas in our house

Last night, Angie called to say Olivia had left me a present at my front door.

When I got home, this is what she had gotten me, with a really cute card that she had drawn a Christmas tree on.

Now everyone who knows me in real life, knows that this is me! This is my color. I can just hear her at the store.

"This one is for Seachelle, Gramma, Seachelle would love this one. Let's get this for Seachelle, cuz she would want to have it. Gramma, let's buy this one just for Seachelle."

In real Life, this would be perfect! It would match everything else on my tree, all glittery and purple and pretty.

In Real life! But I don't live in real life anymore.

I live in bloggyland, Where everything is perfect and beautiful and THEMED!

So, this year I went with a theme for Christmas.

Red, Gold, and Green. (why do I hear a Boy George song?)

And Santa.

But this little pretty does get its own place in this world,

A place of honor,

All by itself.

On this pretty little gold mosaic tree I got last year as a $6.00 surprise from

Princess House.

Sorry, this is the best picture I got of the santa on top of the tree.

More Santas, I really don't have very many yet,
So, I am showing all of them!

Oops, not a santa, just a frame I repainted and stuck a picture from a Christmas card into. I popped the easel off the back and stuck a wire hanger on it. Looks like I need to open it up and turn the picture a bit.

Well, Most of the Santas I have in pairs, except the two largest, so I guess I have more than I am showing.

But definately not enough to do a themed tree, so I have to get creative.

Last night, while catching up on my blog reading, I grabbed a hook and some white and red grocery bags and did this.

I think I am getting better at crocheting because the other night I read a very simple pattern and it made sense!

This is still off the top of my head, but I think I can tell you what I did.

Chain stitch 25, connect into a circle.

Single crochet into every stitch, going around circle about 4 or 5 tiimes.

Switch to red bag, half double crochet in every stitch going around circle once.

Double crochet around circle skipping every fifth stitch for about 3 rows.

Double crochet around circle skipping every third stitch for a few more rows.

Double crochet skipping every other stitch until you have only 4 stitches left.

Switch to white, Single stitch two stitches in each stitch,

Single stitch one stitch in each stitch,

Single stitch one stitch in every other stitch,

Tie off.

I painte mine with glitter, and it dried making it stiff. Then I rolled the white part up like a real Santa hat.

These were real quick, and I am already on my third one.

But now I am thinking....

Hmm. I need to find a glue that won't melt the plastic, and figure out how to paint a Santa face on the balls,

Cheap, easy (ish) and creative.

CANNYN BROKE IT

The Santa wall sat as is all week while I focused on finishing my reapholstry project. Last night I took down the picture frame on the left, painted it, sparkled it, and hung it on the wall.

Below, you can see the cute Santa picture, I didn't get a picture of the finished wall.
From now on, I will take a picture as soon as I finish a project. BECAUSE....
Cannyn stood up from the dinner table, knocking off the first picture I had done, and broke the frame! I don't think it is fixable since it is a cheap plastic frame from the thrift store!
And I thought it was SO CUTE! Oh, well, the joy of raising boys (Right?)

I have been having fun with my glitter paint, I will get more pictures posted as I finish these projects up. I promise! .....~

I Started working on these chairs last week. (http://candarbrygarden.blogspot.com/2009/11/just-couple-of-makeovers.html )But I just finished the second chair tonight. Well almost finished it...Remember my placemat pillows? Well this is another placemat, I split it open and stuffed it and it looked HORRIBLE!!! So, When I was sewing pieces of the chair, I grabbed a scrap of fabric, and a pillow I had bought at Value Village for $2.00 and made an envelope style pillow cover. I just sewed the placemat to the fabric, then folded the fabric and sewed the two sides together and stuffed the (Down and feather) Value village pillow wrapped in batting right inside.

I don't usually buy pillows second hand, but this one was brand new, and feather!

This is the first zipper I have done in about 25 years. I am tired tonight from doing all the apholstery, and I am not good at sewing when I am tired, so the second one will have to wait until tomorrow after work.
(Amazing! It actually functions!)
And here they are in all their new beauty! Just pretend the second chair has her cushion cover on.

I set the chairs in front of the fireplace for a reason.
We have lived in this house for 9 years this weekend.
I have asked for a more traditional mantle and surround for 8 of those years.
I am going to tackle that myself.
POWER TOOLS SCARE ME!
But if you can do it so can I!
At least that is what I tell myself as I look at your blog pages!
It helps me sleep better!
Anyways:
This is my first attempt at reapholstering, and I think I have the hang of it now.
I am going to find a great big ottoman to go with them!
And maybe some wingback chairs,
Or a fancy little loveseat,
Then I can move the monstrosity of the couch back into the man cave!
Where it belongs!
